That is the Nixon Sandbar — the most recognizable raft-up spot in Miami, and the single most requested stop on our daytime charters.

It is also a spot that rewards planning. There is no dock, no bathroom, no snack bar, and the water depth changes hour by hour with the tide. What Is the Nixon Sandbar?

The Nixon Sandbar is a shallow flat in Biscayne Bay where boaters anchor, raft up, and spend the day swimming and socializing. Depending on who you ask, you may hear it called Nixon Beach, the Nixon Beach Sandbar, the Key Biscayne Sandbar, or Mashta Flats. These all refer to the same general stretch of shallow water.

The name goes back to President Richard Nixon’s former home on Key Biscayne, often called the “Winter White House.” The house was demolished in the mid-2000s, but the name stuck to the water nearby and never left.

Where Is Nixon Sandbar Located?

The sandbar sits on the western side of Key Biscayne, in the shallows near Hurricane Harbor and Mashta Island. From downtown Miami and Brickell it is a short, protected run south and east across the bay — one of the reasons it became the default gathering spot rather than the prettier but more distant flats further south.

Worth knowing: the shallow “sweet spot” is not a fixed pin on a chart. It shifts with tide, wind and season. Your captain will read the water on approach rather than steering to a single coordinate.

There is no land access. You cannot drive, walk, or park anywhere near it — the only way to reach the Nixon Sandbar is by boat. Most of our guests reach the sandbar on a private daytime charter out of Miami, which typically pairs the sandbar stop with a cruise past the skyline and the waterfront mansions on the way out.

Timing Is Everything: Tides at the Nixon Sandbar

This is the part most first-timers get wrong. The Nixon Sandbar is not an island — it is a flat that is more or less exposed depending on the tide. Get the timing right and you are standing in clear, calm water. Get it wrong and you are swimming in chest-deep chop wondering what the fuss was about.

The best tide window

Aim to be on the flat around low tide, or in the couple of hours on either side of it. In the popular area the water commonly sits somewhere around knee to chest deep at that point, which is what makes the wading and floating so pleasant. At high tide the same spot can be deep enough that stepping off the swim platform stops being fun for shorter guests and kids.

Weekday vs. weekend

Weekends and holidays are the full spectacle: dozens to hundreds of boats, sound systems, inflatables, a floating neighborhood. If that is the experience you are after, go on a Saturday and get there early, because the good anchoring room fills up.

If you want the same water without the crowd, book a weekday. Same turquoise, a fraction of the traffic, and noticeably easier anchoring.

Time of day

Mornings tend to be calmer and quieter. Afternoons bring more boats and, in summer, a higher chance of a passing thunderstorm rolling off the Everglades. A late-morning departure is usually the sweet spot for a summer sandbar day.

How Long Should You Book for a Sandbar Day?

A sandbar trip has three parts: the run out, the time anchored, and the run back. On a three-hour charter, the travel time eats into your float time noticeably. Four to six hours is the more comfortable range if the sandbar is the main event — it leaves room to cruise past the skyline, anchor without watching the clock, and still get back on schedule.

What to Bring to the Sandbar

There are no facilities out there, so whatever you want for the day comes with you. Our charters are BYOB and we provide coolers and ice, which covers most of it. A short list:

• More water than you think you need — the sun on open water is deceptive
• Reef-safe sunscreen, reapplied after swimming
• A hat and a cover-up for the ride back
• Water shoes if you have sensitive feet; the bottom is sandy but not uniformly so
• A dry bag or pouch for phones and keys
• Snacks or catering arranged in advance
• A floatie or two, if that is your style

Leave behind: red wine or anything else that can stain, firearms, and anything you would hate to lose overboard.

Anchoring Responsibly: Protect the Seagrass

Biscayne Bay’s seagrass beds are the foundation of the whole ecosystem, and they are fragile. A single anchor dropped in the wrong place, or a prop dragged through a shallow bed, can scar an area that takes years to recover. Scarring leads to erosion, the damage spreads, and water quality suffers along with it.
