For many pet owners, a day out isn't quite the same without their favorite companion. Whether you're planning a relaxing afternoon on Biscayne Bay or celebrating a special occasion with friends and family, it's natural to wonder if your pet can join you aboard a private yacht.
The good news is that bringing a pet on a yacht in Miami may be possible, provided certain arrangements are made in advance.
At Aura Yacht Charters, we understand that pets are part of the family. While not every charter can accommodate animals, we're happy to explore the possibility and help you understand what to consider before bringing your furry companion along.
Are Pets Allowed on Private Yacht Charters in Miami?
Pet policies can vary considerably between yacht rental companies, and even between individual vessels. That's why checking before making your plans is essential.
At Aura Yacht Charters, pets may be permitted on board with prior approval. Guests must submit their request at least 48 hours before their scheduled charter, allowing our team to check whether the selected crew can accommodate the animal.
Approval isn't automatic, and guests should wait for confirmation before planning to bring their pet.
We currently consider small pets weighing no more than 5 kilograms, such as a small poodle or schnauzer. The weight limit applies regardless of breed, and acceptance remains subject to crew approval.
These arrangements help ensure that the experience is suitable for everyone involved, including your pet.
If you're considering bringing an animal along, we recommend mentioning it as soon as you contact our reservations team. That gives us more time to review the request and answer any questions before your charter.
Preparing Your Pet for a Comfortable Day on the Water
A little preparation can make a big difference when introducing your pet to a new environment, especially one as unfamiliar as a moving yacht.
Just like you would pack your own essentials for a day on Biscayne Bay, your pet should have a dedicated travel bag with everything they might need throughout the trip.
We recommend bringing fresh drinking water, food, a travel bowl, waste disposal bags, paper towels, and any additional cleaning supplies your pet may require. It's also a good idea to pack something familiar, like their favorite blanket, bed, or toy. Being surrounded by familiar scents and belongings can help your pet feel more comfortable in an unfamiliar environment, especially if it's their first time aboard a yacht.
It's also a good idea to bring a small first-aid kit specifically for your pet. Consider including sterile gauze, nonstick wound dressings, bandage wrap, and any medications prescribed by your veterinarian. Keep your veterinarian's contact information easily accessible in case you need advice during the trip. While we hope you'll never need these supplies, a little extra preparation can go a long way toward keeping your companion safe and comfortable. Always consult your veterinarian before giving your pet any medication.
A properly fitted, functional, and previously tested pet life jacket is essential. Make sure your pet is comfortable wearing it before the charter. A life jacket that fits poorly or hasn't been tested may not provide the protection you expect.
It's also worth considering how your pet behaves in unfamiliar surroundings.
Just like people, some pets can experience motion sickness while traveling on the water. Pay attention to how your companion reacts to the yacht's movement, especially if they've never been on a boat before. If your pet has experienced travel sickness in the past, consider speaking with your veterinarian before the trip. It's also a good idea to give your pet a chance to relieve themselves before boarding, since opportunities to go ashore during the charter may be limited.
Some animals adapt quickly to new experiences, while others may become nervous around engine sounds, movement, or unfamiliar people. If your pet has never been on a boat, gradually introducing them to their life jacket and travel equipment beforehand can help make the experience less stressful.
Although prior training isn't a requirement, we strongly recommend bringing pets that are already accustomed to following basic instructions and remaining calm around distractions. This can make the trip safer and more enjoyable for both your pet and the other guests.
And remember that Miami's sunshine can be intense, particularly during warmer months. Make sure your pet has access to fresh water and a comfortable, shaded place to rest whenever possible.
Keeping Your Pet Safe During the Charter
Being out on the water is a wonderful experience, but it also requires extra attention when traveling with animals.
One important thing to remember is that pet GPS trackers are not a substitute for direct supervision. Many tracking devices cannot reliably transmit a location while submerged underwater, meaning you might not be able to locate your pet using GPS if it falls overboard.
For that reason, we strongly recommend keeping your pet close to you and under direct supervision throughout the entire charter.
Avoid leaving your pet unattended on exterior decks or allowing it to move around areas where it could accidentally fall into the water.
A comfortable, properly fitted harness and a short leash can also help you keep your pet close while moving around outdoor areas. Always hold the leash yourself rather than securing your pet to a railing or other part of the yacht. Pay particular attention around stairs, railings, and swimming platforms, where a moment of distraction could lead to an accident.
While your selected captain and crew are responsible for their respective vessel operations and duties, they are not responsible for supervising, handling, or caring for your pet.
The pet's owner or accompanying guest is entirely responsible for the animal's safety, behavior, and supervision during the experience.
Pet owners are also fully responsible for any damage their animals cause to the yacht, including damage to furniture, upholstery, or other onboard equipment.
Being prepared and attentive helps protect your pet, your fellow guests, and the vessel itself.
With the right planning, bringing a small pet on a private yacht can be a lovely way to spend time together. The key is making sure the experience is appropriate for your animal and that everyone understands the arrangements beforehand.
